A New Scale Sheds Light on Temporary Affective Disturbances in New Puppy Owners
Estimated reading time: 5 minutes
Bringing a new puppy home is a delightful experience, but let’s admit it, it can also stir up a whirlwind of emotions. Just like the “baby blues” that new parents go through, new puppy owners can experience a rollercoaster of feelings. A recent study has come up with a handy tool, the Puppy Blues Scale, which helps shed light on this phenomenon.
What are the Puppy Blues?

Puppy Blues refer to the mix of stress, anxiety, and a dash of sadness that some new puppy owners might feel. These emotions can spring from a variety of sources like the demands of caring for a new pet, adjusting to a new routine, or feeling a bit swamped by the responsibility of training and socializing the pup.
The Study: Development and Validation of the Puppy Blues Scale
The researcher set out to create a tool that can accurately measure these temporary emotional waves in new puppy owners. Then they crafted the Puppy Blues Scale, taking cues from existing scales used to assess postpartum depression in new mothers. This scale was designed to capture the feelings of frustration, anxiety, and weariness linked with bringing a new puppy home.
Participants were invited to express their feelings about statements like “I feel overwhelmed by my puppy” and “I feel anxious about caring for my puppy” on a scale from 1 to 5. Here, 1 indicated a “strongly disagree” and 5 indicated a “strongly agree.” Then researchers gathered these responses to calculate a total score. The higher scores hinted at a more intense case of the puppy blues.

To give the scale a thumbs-up, researchers tested it with a group of new puppy owners. First, participants filled in a questionnaire about their feelings and experiences related to their new cuddly companion. Following that results confirmed that the Puppy Blues Scale has potential for measuring the temporary emotional whirlwinds experienced by new puppy owners.
What Does the Study Mean For Us?
The Puppy Blues Scale is a handy tool for identifying temporary emotional ups and downs that new puppy owners experience. But, it’s important to bear in mind a few of its limitations. Since the scale was put together and tested using a relatively small group of people, it might limit how well it applies to all the puppy owners out there. The study mainly looked at feelings of frustration, anxiety, and weariness, but didn’t really explore other things that might add to the puppy blues, like not getting enough sleep or having to change your routine. Future research could dig deeper into these areas to help us understand the whole picture of the puppy blues experience.
The Puppy Blues Scale opens up new avenues for researchers and pet owners. It empowers researchers with a standard tool to dig deeper into the prevalence and impact of these temporary emotional waves. Certainly this could lead to the creation of targeted interventions and support strategies for new puppy owners.

For pet owners, the Puppy Blues Scale can be a great ally in identifying and acknowledging their feelings during the early days of pet ownership. Further more, understanding and addressing these emotions can make the journey of new puppy ownership less bumpy and more rewarding.
Riding the Emotional Wave: Navigating the Puppy Blues
What some folks have said about their experience:
We certainly grappled with challenging emotions during the early stages of puppyhood. Both my boyfriend and I questioned our decision to get a puppy; we adopted him when he was around 2.5 months old. Now, he’s nearly 6 months old, and with consistent training (despite occasional off days/weeks), he has improved significantly.
My husband and I both felt the same way when our dog was a puppy. We agreed that it was a more challenging time than when we had our two babies. He even experienced what we called “post-puptum depression” because high-energy puppies can be wild. Given a choice, I’d take a newborn human any day of the week!
I was sitting on the balcony, missing the neighbor’s cat that used to visit frequently, and questioning my decision to get a puppy. I had a disagreement with my boyfriend, who echoed his father’s words, “it’s a puppy, they bite”. I felt misunderstood, so I had a good cry and did some online research.
During my research, I googled phrases like “is it normal to hate your puppy”. I found a text that essentially concluded, “they give you Stockholm syndrome, but it’s totally worth it in the end”.
I found an online forum, made a post about how much he was biting me, and read other people’s posts. Seeing that my experience was normal, I decided not to return him to the breeder and instead, persevere. I found a guide for my breed that outlined what stages to expect. It indicated that ages 3-4 months, 7-10 months, and 17-24 months would be challenging, with calmer periods in between. This information was extremely helpful.
I know, the early stages of puppyhood can seem a bit overwhelming and might even lead you to question your decision to adopt a puppy. But remember, with a little patience, some consistent training, and understanding that every phase of a puppy’s life comes with its own unique challenges, things will start to get a lot easier. Overall, don’t shy away from doing a bit of online research or joining community forums. They can be a good source of support. Remember, you’re not alone in navigating these challenges and there’s a whole community here to support you through the journey of puppyhood!
