Charlie is a rescue who has a lot of fearful feelings. He`s a big flight risk... when his guardian Barbara adopted him, she was grieving the loss of her dog and heart broken that Charlie was in such a shut down state and terrified of her. She wants nothing more than to shower him with love and give him the best life.
Charlie really struggles with thresholds. He bolts across them. This has been a major safety issue as they go for walks, one bolt and a dropped leash and he`s gone. This has been a very serious issue.
Out first step was management. We keep a light weight leash on Charlie so if we need to manage him we can do so without picking him up which has been an issue for him. When on walks we double leash. One leash in hand and another on waist as a backup.
Now we are working on slowing Charlie down through the threshold. Starting with an internal doorway. The goal is to help Charlie feel safe crossing this threshold. And then generalize that to other thresholds. Charlie also struggles with flooring but does fantastic on muddy mats, so we`re using muddy mats to make the flooring transition much easier. We can adjust as he progresses.
I`m so proud of Barbara and Charlie. It`s a slow process but even in this single session he has been able to slow down and really think about crossing without bolting.

Your puppy just exploded into a full-speed lap around the living room.
That`s a FRAP! A Frantic Random Activity Period.
And it`s completely normal.
Why it matters:
Zoomies release built-up energy, often after naps, baths, or excitement.
They are not a sign your puppy is out of control or misbehaving.
Punishing them to stop them adds stress without teaching anything.
Understanding this takes the panic out of the moment.
All you need:
– A safe, open space free of furniture corners or stairs
– Non-slip flooring or an outdoor area, if possible
– Patience; this phase passes in minutes
Check the space before it starts.
Let it happen — give your puppy room to run.
Redirect with a toy if it turns into biting people or furniture.
Ride it out. Most FRAPs last two to five minutes.
This is play, not chaos.
Give it room to happen safely.
Watch for what triggers your puppy`s zoomies this week... bath time, bedtime, and after meals are common culprits.
