Potty training a puppy can feel like a big, intimidating adventure, especially if you’re a new pet parent and this is your first time. It’s a journey packed with all sorts of twists and turns that can really test your patience. But remember, even the most experienced dog lovers have been in your shoes.

Puppies don’t know where to go.

The first hurdle is that puppies, bless their hearts, just don’t know where to do their business. They don’t have diapers like human babies usually, and they haven’t quite grasped the concept of a bathroom. So, it’s up to you, their loving owner, to show them the ropes. Actively taking your puppy to the appropriate potty spot must be intentional, even if you choose to use pee pads indoors. Leashing up for potty time can help prevent playful shenanigans. Consider using an exercise pen to block off the potty spot so your pup won’t roam around. It takes a little time, a lot of patience, and some consistent training, but your puppy will eventually understand where they should and shouldn’t go.

Puppies need frequent trips to potty.

Another cute yet challenging feature of puppies is their tiny bladders and speedy metabolisms. This means they need to go out more frequently, usually every hour or two. Did you know, most puppies don’t have control of their bladder until at least 14 weeks of age? This can be a bit of a juggle, especially at night or when you’re busy. But remember, those late-night bathroom trips and the occasional pause of an important task are all part of the journey. It’s a test of patience, but it’s so essential to the process. Setting an alarm through the night can help you actively take your puppy out at night to prevent waking up to crying.

Accidents will happen.

And then there’s the inevitable clean-up duty. Despite all your best efforts and the most well-planned schedules, there will be a few messes along the way. Cleaning up thoroughly is key to prevent your pup from mistaking that area for their bathroom in the future. This might mean bringing out the heavy-duty cleaning supplies and spending some extra time making sure the area is spotless. Use an enzymatic cleaner to clean up the area. Enzymatic cleaners break down the chemical compounds of urine and other biologics. Cleaning up the accident area is important to prevent your puppy from using that spot to do their business on the regular.

But hey, don’t get too caught up in the challenges. Remember, the secret to successful potty training is patience and consistency. There might be moments of frustration, but keep in mind, your little pup is learning something entirely new and they’re counting on you to help them. With time, effort, and a whole lot of love, your puppy will get the hang of it. The journey might be a bit bumpy, but the reward of seeing your well-trained, grown-up dog is beyond worth it.

Sasha’s Potty Troubles

I recently had the pleasure of assisting a client who had a super cute puppy, Sasha, but oh boy, potty training was a tough nut to crack! They had imagined all the fun times with their new furry friend, but instead, they were constantly on clean-up duty. The stress was starting to take all the fun out of their new puppy experience.

But guess what? Things turned around when we rolled out my special training program. We put together a consistent potty training routine and voila, we started seeing positive changes within a few days!

🐶 Now, Sasha knows exactly where to take care of business.

🐶 Accidents? They’ve taken a nosedive.

🐶 And the best part? The family can now spend quality time with their puppy without the constant worry of cleaning up.
